Until recently, the term "organic plant" was unknown to Greece. In Europe and the US there were few nurseries certifying plant material produced as organic. Nursery certification and its regulations actually became valid in the late 1990s, as the certification system in organic farming matured.
The certification system structures needed to be organized from the very first stage, i.e. the seed or graft; so did the production of propagation material, since it plays a central role in the success of the ensuing plants. Finally, it was necessary to provide through certified nurseries the motivation to protect and promote local or open-pollinated varieties.
Today, there are organic nurseries in almost all countries where organic farming is applied; in recent years, research programmes on the production of certified organic propagation material have begun to emerge.
We have chosen to go into organic plant production professionally because:
1) Organic farming mainly aims at protecting biodiversity, and significant efforts have been – and will be – made towards this aim.
2) We wanted to support another way, a different method, less energy-consuming, with environmentally-friendly inputs and production processes.
3) Considering the potential of Greek agriculture, the only viable outlook is to promote the particular flavour of local products. We live in a country with a rich gastronomic tradition and we have many alternatives as far as the creation of new products is concerned. All we have to do is look around and adopt modern methods for processing, packaging and promoting our products.
More than a decade ago, all of that led us to create an organic nursery which aspired to give rise to a different, high-quality farming; a nursery that would propose cultivation methods and ecological techniques, and at the same time produce local certified varieties.
Applying the European Regulation 834/200, Farm Bioma is certified for the plants it produces.
What are the main requirements for a plant to be certified as organic?
Seed from a verified organic plantation or, if originating from a conventional cultivation, accompanied by the required licences. The amount of seed used is controlled so that it is consistent with the number of plants produced.
Grafts from organic plantations. No use of rooting chemicals. The number of grafts is controlled so that it is consistent with the size of the stock nursery.
Cultivation substrate not enriched with chemicals.
Fertilization and plant protection within the nursery are done only with approved plant products, and their use is controlled.
No Genetically Modified Organisms or derivatives thereof.
